Chief Operations Officer - Insurance

About the role

The Chief Operations Officer leads underwriting, claims and other general insurance management areas and ensures services meet customer expectations. The role reports to the Chief Executive Officer and is based in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

Key responsibilities

• In liaison with the Underwriting Manager, ensure underwriting policies reflect the country's strategic risk management framework and are followed
• In liaison with the Claims Manager, ensure claims policies follow the same framework
• Ensure efficient claims and underwriting procedures and set and monitor operational budgets
• Gather market intelligence, adopt profitable pricing mechanisms and manage relationships with clients, intermediaries and service providers
• Establish control mechanisms and service-level standards for agents, brokers, customers and the regulator
• Ensure a robust reinsurance program and a versatile risk survey function
• Deliver on performance requirements from the department strategy map, balanced scorecard and personal scorecard

Required profile

• Bachelor's degree; MBA is an added advantage
• Professional qualification in Insurance (ACII) or equivalent is mandatory
• 10 years' experience, 4-5 in a managerial capacity in a busy environment
• Commercial and general management experience in a company of similar size or larger
• Extensive experience identifying and managing operational risks
