General Manager - Clearing and Forwarding

About the role

A leading clearing and forwarding company with over 30 years of experience is looking for a General Manager to oversee its strategic, operational and financial performance. The role suits someone with strong leadership, deep knowledge of logistics and customs processes, and a track record of optimizing operations, ensuring compliance and building client relationships.

Key responsibilities

• Oversee import and export shipments, troubleshoot issues in real time and implement proactive solutions to prevent delays.
• Drive business development and expansion by building relationships with potential, new and existing clients to meet revenue targets.
• Ensure compliance with Tanzanian statutory reporting, including withholding tax, PAYE, SDL, NSSF, WCF, provisional tax and monthly VAT returns.
• Manage internal communication and coordination, follow up on outstanding payments (debtors), and enforce job requirements with quarterly performance reviews.
• Manage the company inbox, oversee payroll and HR functions including salary and benefit negotiations, and keep owners informed.
• Communicate with external stakeholders (service providers, suppliers, buyers) and coordinate tasks across departments and time zones using task management software.

Required profile

• Bachelor's degree in a relevant field such as Logistics, Supply Chain Management, Business Administration or Finance.
• At least 5 years of senior managerial experience in logistics, clearing and forwarding or trucking.
• Solid understanding of Tanzanian statutory compliance and tax obligations.
• Experience negotiating staff contracts, handling HR matters and conducting performance evaluations.
• Willingness to work flexible hours across time zones, including the Middle East and Africa.

Required skills

• Microsoft Office Suite, email platforms and task management tools (e.g. Asana, Trello).
• Managing budgets, financial reporting and cost control.
• Familiarity with international trade processes, documentation and customs regulations.
