About the role
The Customs Liaison Officer ensures timely and accurate processing of customs, tax, and wharfage documentation for transit and localized cargo across Tanzania and neighboring countries. The role coordinates with suppliers, customers, TRA/PBPA staff, and internal teams to avoid penalties and ensure smooth cargo movement.
Key responsibilities
- Interact with suppliers, customers and TRA/PBPA staff to process documentation, ensuring cooperation and accuracy.
- Verify correctness of all documents involving large monetary values and meet strict processing deadlines.
- Apply Safety Management Systems and ensure product quality complies with Tanzania specifications.
- Process fuel taxes, perform manifest comparisons and pay wharfage on time to avoid penalties.
- Follow up on transit and transshipment documentation for Tanzania, DRC, Burundi, Uganda, Rwanda, Zambia and related customers.
- Prepare monthly tax forecasts, assess taxes and ensure payments follow customs procedures.
- Manage additional taxes, claim over‑paid fuel taxes and ensure timely payment of wharfage.
- Generate weekly transit product age reports and request extensions to prevent product localization.
- Coordinate transit loadings, ensure documentation is completed, and monitor border validation and bond cancellation.
- Handle customs queries, audits and stock reconciliations, providing required documents to customers and regulators.
- Communicate and process Notice of Intention (NOI) with depot managers and supply teams.
Required profile
- Strong attention to detail and ability to handle large financial documents.
- Capacity to work under tight deadlines and manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
- Effective communication skills for coordination with internal and external stakeholders.
- Knowledge of customs procedures, tax regulations and wharfage processes in Tanzania and the region.
- Familiarity with safety management systems and quality‑control standards.
- Proficiency in preparing reports, forecasts and age‑report analyses.
- Experience in logistics, customs or supply‑chain operations is preferred.
