Sustainability Manager

About the role

NBC, the oldest serving bank in Tanzania, is looking for a Sustainability Manager at its Head Office. The role provides strategic direction on ESG and sustainability, integrates sustainability into core operations, strengthens partnerships with Development Finance Institutions (DFIs) and ensures compliance with regulatory and internal requirements.

Key responsibilities

• Support the ESG strategy: coordinate with business heads on drafting and implementation, set targets aligned with bank strategy and international standards, and integrate sustainability into operations.
• Project management: identify and evaluate pilot projects, coordinate proposals and grant applications, oversee colleagues and partners, conduct due diligence and prepare progress reports.
• Drive performance: manage sustainability as a commercial partnership, quality-assure specialist inputs, act as conduit for consultants and support the Sustainability Working Group Committee.
• Prepare briefing papers, sustainability insights and performance updates for senior leadership, and develop strategies on energy use, resource conservation, recycling, waste, transportation, education and building design.
• Monitor DFI sustainability-linked covenants and KPIs, maintain a covenant tracking system and prepare periodic reports for DFIs.
• Lead IFRS S1 and IFRS S2 disclosure preparation, gap assessments, data automation and annual sustainability reporting.
• Implement the environmental and social sustainability framework, support related policies and stay aligned with Bank of Tanzania climate risk guidelines and national environmental regulations.
• Build awareness and capacity internally, and represent the bank externally to regulators, peers and opinion formers.

Required profile

• Bachelor's degree or advanced diploma in Environmental Studies, Sustainability, Finance, Economics, Business Administration or a related field.
• Postgraduate qualification or certification in ESG, sustainability reporting or climate risk desirable.
• Minimum 3-5 years' experience in sustainability/ESG, climate risk, corporate reporting or risk/compliance roles.
• Experience with DFI-funded projects or sustainability-linked financing is advantageous.

Required skills

• Familiarity with international reporting frameworks such as IFRS, TCFD, GRI and SASB.
• Ability to lead ESG reporting, data consolidation and stakeholder engagement.
