Shift Engineer - Production

About the role

A client of Shugulika Africa Limited, a leading manufacturer, is looking for a Shift Engineer to oversee and ensure smooth, efficient operations during assigned shifts. The role covers production planning, preventive maintenance coordination, documentation, workforce supervision and strict adherence to safety, quality and productivity standards.

Key responsibilities

• Manage day-to-day production activities and ensure production targets for quantity and quality are met.
• Allocate manpower effectively and monitor performance; supervise operators, technicians and contract workers.
• Monitor machine performance, take corrective action on breakdowns and optimize machine utilization to reduce downtime.
• Execute daily and weekly production schedules and coordinate with planning and stores for material availability.
• Support the maintenance team in scheduling and executing preventive maintenance, and conduct routine machine checks.
• Maintain shift logbooks, production reports and downtime records, and ensure compliance with ISO, GMP and other regulatory standards.
• Monitor rejection levels, analyse root causes and implement corrective actions.
• Provide on-the-job training to operators on safety, quality and productivity, enforce safety standards and PPE use, and report unsafe practices or near misses.

Required profile

• Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering / Production Engineering (or equivalent).
• 2-5 years of experience in production or manufacturing (FMCG, automotive, engineering or process industries preferred).
• Rotational shift duties (day/night) in a factory/plant environment, interacting with production, maintenance, QC and stores teams.

Required skills

• Production planning and control knowledge.
• Hands-on experience with machines, tools and equipment.
• Safety standards and preventive maintenance systems.
• MS Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook); ERP / SAP or production planning software.
• Data analysis, reporting and documentation using spreadsheets and dashboards.
