General Manager - Logistics

About the role

A client in the transport and logistics industry is looking for an experienced, strategic and results-driven General Manager to lead its end-to-end transport operations. The role covers fleet productivity, transport operations, customer service, asset utilization, operational controls, cost management and continuous improvement, and calls for a commercially minded leader with strong operational expertise and financial discipline.

Key responsibilities

• Lead day-to-day transport operations to deliver efficient, safe and reliable service.
• Deliver monthly fleet utilization and kilometre targets and optimize truck deployment, scheduling and route planning.
• Reduce vehicle idle time and turnaround time, and ensure timely loading, transport and delivery of customer shipments.
• Coordinate with customers, depots and warehouses; use third-party transport when internal fleet capacity is insufficient.
• Work with workshop and maintenance teams to maximize fleet availability and minimize breakdowns through preventive maintenance.
• Manage the transport operating budget, monitor cost per kilometre and fleet profitability, and investigate abnormal costs and transit shortages.
• Verify GPS travel distances against financial records, keep fleet master data, tyre records and trip documentation accurate, and ensure GPS tracking, vehicle cameras and fleet monitoring systems work.
• Ensure compliance with transport regulations and policies, and lead driver training, safety initiatives and accident investigation.
• Develop departmental KPIs, supervise the Finance Controller and Operations Coordinator, and support customer acquisition and commercial pricing decisions.

Required profile

• Bachelor's degree in Logistics, Supply Chain Management, Engineering, Business Administration or a related field.
• 8-15 years of progressive experience in transport, logistics or fleet management, including large commercial or heavy vehicle fleets.
• Proven experience managing operational budgets and improving underperforming logistics operations.
• Willingness to travel regularly across Tanzania; previous East Africa experience preferred.

Required skills

• Strong understanding of transport costing, fleet utilization and logistics operations.
• Advanced Microsoft Excel and logistics reporting.
• Experience with GPS tracking, fleet monitoring and transport management systems is highly desirable.
• Knowledge of weighbridges, TRA regulations and transport compliance is highly desirable.
