Assistant Accountant

About the role

A client in the gold mining industry is looking for an Assistant Accountant to join its finance and accounting team. The role supports the team with clerical and administrative work so that financial records are accurate, transactions are processed efficiently and regulatory compliance is maintained. It covers accounts payable and receivable, month-end and year-end closing, and audit support.

Key responsibilities

• Maintain accurate and up-to-date financial records
• Process and record invoices, payments, receipts and other financial transactions
• Support the preparation of financial reports, budgets and financial statements
• Reconcile bank statements and other financial records
• File and maintain accounting documents and records
• Prepare payment vouchers, journal entries and data entry into accounting systems
• Support payroll by compiling and verifying employee data
• Respond to vendor and client queries about payments or invoices
• Assist with inventory reconciliation and stock records
• Provide audit support by preparing required documentation
• Maintain petty cash records and keep all financial data confidential

Required profile

• Diploma or degree in Accounting, Finance or a related field
• Proven experience as an accounting assistant or in a similar role is an advantage
• Basic understanding of accounting principles and financial regulations
• Excellent organisational and time-management skills, strong attention to detail and accuracy
• Good communication and interpersonal skills; able to work independently and as part of a team

Required skills

• Proficiency in MS Excel and accounting software such as QuickBooks, Tally or Sage
• Knowledge of tax filing procedures and compliance
