Operations Manager - Freight Forwarding

About the role

A client of Shugulika Africa Limited, operating in the logistics and freight forwarding industry, is looking for an experienced Operations Manager to oversee and coordinate all aspects of its clearing and forwarding operations. The role ensures seamless cargo movement, optimises processes, drives cost efficiency and keeps operations compliant with customs and transport regulations.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and implement operational strategies that improve efficiency, cost-effectiveness and client satisfaction.
• Oversee daily clearing and forwarding activities, ensuring timely delivery and compliance with customs and port procedures.
• Coordinate with logistics, export and transit departments to streamline processes and resolve operational challenges.
• Supervise and support departmental heads and operational teams, keeping them aligned with company objectives.
• Maintain close contact with clients and key stakeholders to address inquiries, resolve issues and improve service delivery.
• Monitor financial transactions related to operations, ensuring accuracy, accountability and budget adherence.
• Ensure compliance with legal, regulatory and safety requirements across all operational functions.
• Prepare and present daily, weekly and monthly performance reports to management.
• Drive continuous improvement initiatives to shorten turnaround times.
• Lead, train and mentor staff to ensure high performance, motivation and professional growth.

Required profile

• Degree in Clearing and Forwarding, Shipping Management, Logistics or a related field.
• 5-7 years of experience in freight forwarding operations, including supervisory or managerial experience.
• Strong knowledge of customs procedures, TRA regulations, port systems and shipping line operations.
• Excellent communication, negotiation and analytical skills, with proven leadership and organisational abilities.
• Attention to detail, accountability and the ability to work under pressure.
• Adaptable, resourceful and able to lead in a fast-paced environment.

Required skills

• Proficiency in MS Office applications.
• Familiarity with operational software such as SAP is an advantage.
