About the role
The Import & Export (I&E) Business Supervisor will lead the end‑to‑end customs clearance process for all inbound and outbound shipments, ensuring compliance with Tanzanian regulations and timely delivery. Reporting to senior management, this role oversees a dedicated team and works closely with government agencies, freight forwarders and shipping lines.
Key responsibilities
- Manage the full import and export customs clearance process, from declaration to cargo release and delivery.
- Review and supervise all import/export documentation and customs declarations.
- Coordinate inspections, resolve classification or valuation disputes, and handle documentation discrepancies.
- Liaise with regulatory bodies such as TRA, TPA, TBS, TMDA, GCLA, as well as shipping lines, ports and container depots.
- Ensure compliance with Tanzanian customs regulations, import/export laws and international trade requirements.
- Monitor duties, taxes, HS‑code classifications and customs valuation.
- Control customs clearance costs, evaluate service providers and identify efficiency improvements.
- Develop and maintain strong relationships with government agencies and external stakeholders.
- Supervise and mentor the Import & Export team to achieve KPIs and operational targets.
- Prepare operational and compliance reports and drive continuous process improvements.
Required profile
- Bachelor’s degree in Logistics, Supply Chain Management, International Trade, Business Administration, Customs Administration or a related field.
- Minimum 5 years of experience managing import and export customs clearance operations in Tanzania.
- Proven knowledge of customs procedures, HS‑code classification, customs valuation, duty and tax calculations, and international shipping documentation.
- Experience working with TRA, TPA, TBS, TMDA, GCLA, customs brokers, shipping lines and freight forwarders.
- Excellent leadership, communication, negotiation and stakeholder‑management abilities.
- Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills with the capacity to resolve complex customs issues independently.
- Fluent in English; Swahili is an advantage.
Required skills
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
