Unit Head, Public Sector

About the role

The Unit Head, Public Sector will lead the development and execution of the public sector banking strategy within the Wholesale Banking division. This senior position is responsible for driving growth, managing relationships with government and state‑linked clients, and ensuring high‑quality delivery of banking solutions.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and implement the public sector banking strategy aligned with institutional objectives.
• Acquire new government, parastatal and state‑linked institutional clients and deepen existing relationships.
• Oversee end‑to‑end client coverage across transaction banking, lending, trade finance and treasury solutions.
• Structure tailored financial solutions to meet funding, cash management and operational needs.
• Lead credit origination, prepare credit proposals and coordinate with credit risk teams for approvals.
• Monitor portfolio utilization, risk exposure, repayment performance and early warning signals.
• Drive revenue growth through deposits, lending, fees and cross‑selling of wholesale banking products.
• Ensure compliance with regulatory, internal credit policies and public sector governance requirements.
• Coordinate with product, risk, legal and operations teams for timely transaction execution.
• Coach and develop the public sector coverage team to maintain high performance.
• Track market trends, government policies and fiscal developments to identify opportunities and risks.
• Prepare and present performance, pipeline and portfolio reports to senior management.

Required profile

• Extensive experience in wholesale banking with a focus on public sector clients.
• Proven track record of acquiring and managing large institutional relationships.
• Strong understanding of credit origination, risk management and regulatory compliance.
• Leadership experience in building and coaching high‑performing teams.
• Ability to analyse market and policy trends affecting the public sector.
