Safety Officer - Construction Projects

About the role

A client in the construction industry, represented by Shugulika Africa Limited, is looking for a Safety Officer to work on construction projects across Dar Es Salaam and the Pwani region. The officer ensures that all activities comply with Tanzanian occupational health and safety laws and the company's HSE policies, implements safety management systems, carries out regular inspections and promotes a strong safety culture.

Key responsibilities

• Ensure compliance with the Occupational Safety and Health Act, 2003 and OSHA Tanzania regulations
• Conduct daily site safety inspections and address unsafe conditions promptly
• Check that workers and subcontractors hold valid OSHA medical fitness certificates and have completed safety inductions
• Lead toolbox talks and site safety meetings
• Supervise high-risk activities such as working at heights, lifting, confined spaces and electrical works
• Monitor the use and maintenance of PPE
• Investigate accidents, incidents and near misses, report findings and recommend corrective actions
• Maintain safety documentation including inspection reports, risk assessments and training records
• Coordinate emergency preparedness such as fire and evacuation drills
• Take part in internal and external safety audits and liaise with OSHA officers to close non-conformities

Required profile

• Diploma or Bachelor's degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Science, Civil Engineering or Construction Management
• Valid OSHA Certificate of Competence (Levels I and II)
• Minimum 7 years' experience as a Safety Officer on construction projects in Tanzania
• Experience with international firms with a strict safety culture is an advantage
• Good knowledge of Tanzanian labour, environmental and safety laws
• Strong leadership, reporting and communication skills in English and Swahili
