Intellectual Property Lawyer

About the role

We are seeking a qualified Intellectual Property Lawyer to manage trademark, patent and industrial design matters for clients in Tanzania Mainland and Zanzibar. The role involves providing strategic advice, handling filings and representing clients before authorities, ensuring robust protection of their IP assets.

Key responsibilities

• Prepare, file and prosecute trademark, patent, industrial design and other IP applications in Tanzania Mainland and Zanzibar.
• Conduct trademark and patent searches, due diligence and IP portfolio assessments.
• Advise clients on IP protection strategies, regulatory compliance and licensing arrangements.
• Handle oppositions, objections, renewals, assignments, licensing and related proceedings.
• Draft and review IP agreements such as licensing, assignment, confidentiality and technology transfer contracts.
• Represent clients before government authorities and regulatory bodies on IP matters.
• Monitor and enforce IP rights, providing legal opinions on infringement issues.
• Maintain accurate records and manage IP portfolios for local and international clients.
• Provide legal support on commercial, corporate and regulatory matters related to IP.
• Stay updated on developments in IP laws, regulations and international treaties.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s Degree in Law (LL.B) from a recognized institution.
• Registered Intellectual Property Agent with BRELA.
• Minimum 3 years of proven experience in intellectual property law, including filing and prosecuting trademarks and patents in Tanzania Mainland and Zanzibar.
• Strong knowledge of Tanzanian IP laws, regulations and procedures.
• Excellent legal drafting, research, negotiation and analytical abilities.
• Effective communication and client relationship management skills.
• Ability to manage multiple matters and meet deadlines with minimal supervision.
