Sustainability Specialist – Ports & Terminals

About the role

The Sustainability Specialist will lead environmental and sustainability programmes at DP World Dar es Salaam Terminal, ensuring compliance with Tanzanian legislation, international standards and DP World global strategies.

Key responsibilities

• Drive and monitor site‑level environmental management systems (ISO 14001 EMS) and operational sustainability programmes.
• Lead regulatory compliance, internal and third‑party audits, and implement corrective actions (CAPA).
• Conduct environmental risk assessments for port activities such as dredging, cargo handling, bunkering and vessel emissions.
• Manage hazardous waste handling in line with IMDG Code and local regulations.
• Develop and track waste reduction, energy and water conservation, circular‑economy initiatives and GHG emissions (GHG Protocol).
• Support People & Culture sustainability projects and community ESG initiatives.
• Oversee Permit‑to‑Work controls for high‑risk activities and coordinate spill response plans.
• Maintain continuous environmental monitoring (air, water, noise) and prepare technical reports for regulators and regional meetings.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Sustainability Management, Environmental Engineering or related field (Master’s preferred).
• 2‑4 years of experience in environmental management, ESG reporting or HSE within ports, maritime or industrial settings.
• Strong knowledge of Tanzanian environmental legislation (NEMC/EMA), IFC Performance Standards and ISO 14001.
• Excellent English and Swahili communication and presentation skills.

Required skills

• ISO 14001 EMS certification or experience.
• NEBOSH Environmental Certificate, LEED Green Associate or similar (highly desirable).
• Technical proficiency in GHG Protocol modelling, Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) and waste‑management audit frameworks.
• Experience with environmental sampling and hazardous material handling (IMDG/HAZMAT).
• Advanced MS Office skills (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook) and reporting dashboards.
