Senior Research Manager / Research Director (Tanzania)

About the role

The Senior Research Manager (also referred to as Research Director) will lead the research agenda for Imagine Worldwide’s tablet‑based literacy programme in Tanzania. Reporting to the Executive Head of Research, the role combines research design, project management and stakeholder liaison to ensure high‑quality evidence that guides programme scaling and government decision‑making.

Key responsibilities

• Design and oversee a multi‑method research portfolio that monitors learning outcomes and implementation quality as the programme expands.
• Manage contracts, budgets and deliverables with in‑country research partners.
• Coordinate research schedules with the Tanzania country team and relevant government officials.
• Gather input from internal and external stakeholders to shape research priorities and identify new study needs.
• Prepare and submit research ethics applications and ensure compliance.
• Serve as the primary liaison for government queries related to research findings and programme impact.
• Produce regular progress reports and present evidence to senior leadership and partners.

Required profile

• Proven expertise in quantitative and/or qualitative research methodologies, preferably both.
• Strong project‑management experience, including contract and budget oversight.
• Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaborate across multidisciplinary teams.
• Experience engaging with government stakeholders and delivering evidence‑based recommendations.
• Senior‑level experience in research within the education or nonprofit sector.
