Programme Specialist, Gender & Youth Empowerment

About the role

The Programme Specialist, Gender & Youth Empowerment will lead UNFPA Tanzania’s efforts to advance gender equality and economic empowerment of women and young people. The role focuses on addressing discriminatory norms, improving access to sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR), preventing gender‑based violence, and supporting adolescent girls and young women.

Key responsibilities

• Provide functional leadership for programme design, delivery, stakeholder relations, knowledge management and monitoring & evaluation (M&E) to achieve the Country Programme results.
• Support and strengthen Adolescent and Youth Groups/organizations to ensure meaningful youth participation and leadership on SRHR, GBV prevention and peace‑responsive initiatives.
• Advance normative work on gender equality and youth development through human‑rights‑based, evidence‑informed, gender‑transformative approaches.
• Coordinate closely with UN entities, national partners, civil society organisations and youth networks to promote gender equality, women’s empowerment and the prevention of GBV and harmful practices.
• Contribute to policy development, advocacy and knowledge sharing on gender and youth issues.

Required profile

• Demonstrated experience in programme and technical support for policy and programming in adolescent and youth development, gender equality or women’s empowerment.
• Strong understanding of SRHR, GBV prevention, and gender‑transformative approaches.
• Proven ability to work collaboratively with UN agencies, government bodies, NGOs and youth networks.
• Excellent communication, coordination and stakeholder‑engagement skills.
