Power System Protection Specialist

About the role

MAI Group is seeking an experienced Power System Protection Specialist to support a high‑voltage transmission project in Tanzania. The role involves advanced protection studies, testing, commissioning, engineering, and knowledge‑transfer activities for transmission networks.

Key responsibilities

• Perform protection studies, modelling and coordination for transmission lines, transformers, busbars, reactors and FACTS devices.
• Calculate and validate protection settings for distance, differential, over‑current and earth‑fault schemes.
• Configure, model and assess protection relays using PSS®CAPE and Siemens Advanced Protection Analysis (APA).
• Conduct protection testing, commissioning and troubleshooting with OMICRON equipment, including secondary/primary injection and end‑to‑end tests.
• Implement IEC 61850 engineering, GOOSE messaging and Sampled Values for digital substations.
• Analyse PMU data, disturbances and power swings, and provide practical training to utility engineers.

Required profile

• Advanced degree in Electrical or Power Systems Engineering.
• Significant professional experience in high‑voltage transmission system protection.
• Hands‑on exposure to protection modelling, relay configuration, testing or commissioning.
• Ability to deliver technical support and knowledge transfer to utility staff.
