Pharmaceutical Technician – Ophthalmic Pharmacy

About the role

The Pharmaceutical Technician will work within an eye hospital pharmacy, ensuring accurate dispensing of ophthalmic medicines and supporting multidisciplinary patient care. The role combines direct patient interaction, medication management, and compliance with national pharmacy regulations.

Key responsibilities

• Dispense ophthalmic medications accurately according to clinician prescriptions.
• Counsel patients on proper use of eye drops, ointments, and oral medications, demonstrating instillation techniques.
• Verify prescription completeness, clarify discrepancies, and maintain detailed dispensing records.
• Prepare, label, and package medicines while monitoring expiry dates and storage conditions.
• Manage pharmacy inventory: receive deliveries, conduct stock counts, forecast needs, and prepare purchase requests.
• Ensure compliance with TMDA, Pharmacy Council, and Ministry of Health regulations.
• Support ophthalmologists, optometrists, and nurses by providing timely medication availability for clinics, theatre procedures, and emergencies.
• Participate in quality improvement initiatives, report medication errors, and uphold infection control and waste disposal standards.
• Prepare regular pharmacy reports and maintain patient confidentiality.

Required profile

• Diploma in Pharmaceutical Sciences or Pharmaceutical Technology from a recognized institution.
• Registered with the Pharmacy Council of Tanzania with a valid practising licence.
• Experience in an eye hospital or specialist healthcare facility is an advantage.
