Payroll Officer – Mining Operations

About the role

The Payroll Officer will manage the accurate, timely and compliant processing of employee payroll for a large‑scale gold mining operation in Tanzania. The role ensures payroll records, earnings, statutory deductions, overtime, leave and employee changes are captured and processed according to company policies and Tanzanian regulations.

Key responsibilities

• Review and verify payroll source documents together with Accounts Payable and the Payroll Superintendent.
• Prepare and print payroll reports covering earnings, hours worked, taxes, insurance and leave.
• Maintain comprehensive payroll records and an annual payroll calendar of key tasks and due dates.
• Enter and authorize all payroll changes, updates and overtime in the payroll software system.
• Ensure statutory and applicable deductions are correctly captured and employees are paid accurately and on time.
• Respond to payroll queries, support audits, and submit pension information.
• Implement and monitor internal controls related to payroll and report any weaknesses to the Financial Controller.
• Assist with risk‑minimisation strategies, asset accounting and insurance matters as required.

Required profile

• Bachelor of Commerce or Accounting and Finance; CPA‑T or ACCA qualification is an advantage.
• At least three years of payroll experience, handling complex payroll for 300+ employees (full‑time and casual).
• Strong attention to detail, honesty and ability to work under pressure and meet strict deadlines.
• Ability to work independently and resolve issues without constant supervision.

Required skills

• Good knowledge of payroll software.
• Proficiency with computer‑based financial accounting systems.
