Extension Officer – Barley

About the role

The Extension Officer – Barley will ensure consistent, high‑quality barley production across the Northern region by supporting farmers to meet yield, quality and supply targets aligned with the company’s sourcing strategy. You will work closely with both commercial and smallholder growers, providing technical guidance, monitoring crop performance and promoting sustainable agronomic practices.

Key responsibilities

• Mobilise, recruit and register barley farmers within the assigned area.
• Oversee land preparation, planting, weeding and harvesting according to recommended agronomic practices.
• Implement soil fertility, moisture conservation and crop rotation strategies.
• Ensure certified barley seed supplied by the company is planted at the correct rate.
• Identify acreage, calculate input requirements and manage timely application of herbicides, fungicides and insecticides.
• Monitor crop performance, diagnose pests and diseases, and advise on corrective actions.
• Promote mechanisation such as planters, threshers and harvesters.
• Disseminate improved farming technologies and agronomic practices.
• Maintain accurate farmer data, input distribution records and yield reports.
• Prepare and submit monthly sustainability and production metrics using digital tools.

Required profile

• Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Agronomy or related field.
• Minimum 2 years experience in agronomy or extension services; barley experience is a plus.
• Experience working with commercial and smallholder farmers.
• Valid driver’s licence.
• Fluency in English; Swahili is highly advantageous.

Required skills

• Knowledge of barley agronomy and production systems.
• Ability to use digital reporting tools for agronomic and non‑agronomic data.
• Familiarity with mechanised farming equipment (planters, threshers, harvesters).
