Epidemiology Officer

About the role

The Epidemiology Officer will support Amref Health Africa’s GHSA project in Tanzania, focusing on strengthening event‑based surveillance (EBS) and integrating WASH components to improve public health security. Working closely with the Ministry of Health, regional authorities and partners, the officer will help ensure the country’s surveillance systems meet International Health Regulations.

Key responsibilities

• Coordinate implementation of EBS activities in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, PORALG and partner organisations.
• Provide technical assistance and contribute to the review and development of national IDSR and EBS guidelines, SOPs and training materials together with the MoH Department of Epidemiology.
• Participate as an expert in the National Surveillance Technical Working Group.
• Support national and sub‑national stakeholders in rolling out EBS at regional and district levels.
• Facilitate linkages between indicator‑based and event‑based surveillance systems.
• Maintain regular communication with MoHCDGEC, regional and district health management teams and other relevant departments.

Required profile

• Experience coordinating implementation of event‑based surveillance activities.
• Familiarity with national IDSR and EBS frameworks.
• Ability to work collaboratively with government agencies and international partners.

Required skills

• Event‑Based Surveillance (EBS) methodology.
• Knowledge of Indicator‑Based Surveillance (IDSR) guidelines.
• Drafting technical guidelines, standard operating procedures and training materials.
