Customs & Transit Officer

About the role

The Customs & Transit Officer ensures accurate processing of customs and transit documentation for multiple East African countries. The role involves handling taxes, wharfage, quality control and documentation to avoid penalties, delays and financial losses.

Key responsibilities

• Interact with suppliers, customers and internal staff to obtain and verify all required documents.
• Apply safety management systems and ensure product quality meets Tanzanian specifications.
• Process taxes, fuel taxes, wharfage and additional taxes on time, preparing monthly forecasts and assessments.
• Coordinate transit loadings, maintain complete customs files for Tanzania, DRC, Burundi, Uganda, Rwanda, Zambia and related partners.
• Prepare and send weekly transit product age reports and request extensions to avoid product localization.
• Handle customs queries, audit requests and ensure timely bond cancellations.
• Perform stock reconciliations and provide required certificates, loading summaries and quality reports to customers.
• Coordinate Notice of Intention (NOI) with depot managers and supply teams.

Required profile

• Strong attention to detail and ability to work under strict deadlines.
• Excellent communication skills for dealing with multiple stakeholders.
• Good understanding of customs procedures, tax regulations and wharfage processes in East Africa.
• Ability to manage large volumes of financial transactions accurately.
