Extension Officer – Sorghum

About the role

The Extension Officer – Sorghum will lead sustainable sorghum production in the Dodoma region, supporting farmers to meet yield, quality and supply targets aligned with the company’s sourcing mandate. You will work directly with smallholder and commercial growers, providing technical guidance throughout the crop cycle.

Key responsibilities

• Mobilise, recruit and register sorghum farmers in the assigned area.
• Ensure timely land preparation, planting, weeding and harvesting according to agronomic best practices.
• Promote soil fertility, moisture conservation and crop‑rotation practices.
• Verify acreage, input requirements and ensure use of certified seed at correct rates.
• Oversee correct application of herbicides, fungicides and insecticides.
• Monitor crop growth, identify pest or disease outbreaks and advise corrective actions.
• Encourage mechanisation (planters, threshers, etc.) and disseminate new farming technologies.
• Maintain accurate databases of seed distribution, planted area and yields.
• Prepare and submit monthly reports, including sustainability activities.

Required profile

• Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Agronomy or a related field.
• Minimum 2 years experience in agronomy or agricultural extension.
• Experience working with smallholder and commercial farmers.
• Valid driver’s licence.
• Fluency in English (Swahili is an advantage).
• Strong supervisory, negotiation, interpersonal and decision‑making skills.
