Underwriting Manager

About the role

The Underwriting Manager will develop and manage underwriting and reinsurance activities in line with the company’s policies, ensuring profitability and meeting stakeholder expectations. This position reports directly to the Chief Operations Officer.

Key responsibilities

• Oversee all underwriting and reinsurance activities, vetting risks to accept only quality business at approved rates.
• Implement underwriting strategy, policies, and procedures while achieving renewal retention targets.
• Continuously review account performance to maintain profitability and meet loss‑ratio goals.
• Design and manage reinsurance programmes to ensure optimal utilisation of treaties.
• Develop and enforce policies for risk surveys and client onboarding, ensuring compliance with KYC, AML/CFT standards.
• Maintain relationships with clients, intermediaries, service providers and regulators to uphold service level agreements.
• Supervise, appraise, train and develop departmental staff, setting goals and monitoring performance.
• Prepare timely reports and perform any other duties assigned by the company.

Required profile

• Relevant Bachelor’s degree; MBA is an advantage.
• Professional insurance qualification (e.g., ACII or equivalent).
• Minimum seven years underwriting experience, with at least three to four years in a managerial role.
• Proven track record as an Underwriting Manager in the insurance industry.
• Strong understanding of technology and process optimisation to reduce turnaround times.
• Leadership capability to drive strategic objectives, develop talent and manage operational risk.
