Shari’ah Quality Assurance & Compliance Manager

About the role

The Shari’ah Quality Assurance & Compliance Manager safeguards the integrity of Shari’ah across NBC’s Islamic Banking division. Reporting to the Head of Islamic Banking, the role ensures that all products, processes, contracts and customer interactions comply with Shari’ah law and regulatory requirements.

Key responsibilities

• Own and continuously strengthen the Shari’ah compliance architecture, aligning policies with AAOIFI standards and Bank of Tanzania guidance.
• Serve as primary liaison with the Shari’ah Advisory Committee, organising meetings, preparing agenda papers, distributing minutes and maintaining a fatwa register.
• Monitor implementation of SAC decisions and fatwas, escalating non‑implementation risks to senior management.
• Ensure all new Islamic Banking products, services and contracts receive SAC approval and maintain a comprehensive approval register.
• Act as the main contact for regulatory bodies on Islamic Banking compliance matters, representing the division in regulatory engagements.
• Conduct independent quarterly Shari’ah compliance reviews and annual internal audits, documenting findings and remediation actions.
• Prepare and present Shari’ah compliance reports to the Head of Islamic Banking, EXCO and the Board Audit & Risk Committee.

Required profile

• Demonstrated experience in Shari’ah compliance within Islamic Banking.
• Ability to lead development, implementation and continuous improvement of compliance frameworks.
• Experience conducting independent reviews, audits and quality assurance activities.
• Proven capability to manage relationships with Shari’ah Supervisory Boards and regulatory authorities.
• Readiness to assume oversight of compliance matters and strategic decisions in the Head’s absence.
