Senior Manager – Administration & Educational Programmes

About the role

The Senior Manager – Administration & Educational Programmes will provide strategic direction for all administrative and operational matters at the Arusha Climate & Environmental Research Centre (ACER) of Aga Khan University. Based in Arusha, Tanzania, the role supports the centre’s research mission, ensures compliance with institutional and regulatory requirements, and enhances coordination among researchers, partners and administrative teams.

Key responsibilities

• Lead planning, implementation and continuous improvement of educational programmes and related administrative functions.
• Coach, develop and manage administrative staff to foster a high‑performance, service‑oriented culture.
• Identify operational risks and implement mitigation strategies to ensure business continuity.
• Oversee delivery of field schools, research visits and academic activities, including logistical arrangements for visitors and events.
• Support grant proposal preparation, submission and administration, and monitor project budgets for compliance with donor and university policies.
• Maintain records of research outputs, publications and project reports for institutional reporting.
• Manage ACER facilities and infrastructure, ensuring security, maintenance and operational readiness.
• Coordinate ICT resources and administrative systems that support research and operational functions.

Required profile

• Proven experience in senior administrative or programme management roles, preferably in research or higher‑education environments.
• Strong leadership and people‑management skills with a track record of building high‑performing teams.
• Demonstrated ability to assess operational risks and implement effective mitigation measures.
• Experience in grant administration, budgeting and compliance with donor requirements.
• Excellent stakeholder management skills, capable of working with government agencies, academic institutions and development partners.
