Packaging Engineer – Strategic Maintenance Lead

About the role

The Packaging Engineer will take strategic leadership of the maintenance function for packaging operations, ensuring equipment and system integrity while complying with relevant standards and legislation. You will drive continuous improvement, manage risk, and support a safe, high‑performance work environment.

Key responsibilities

• Maintain a safe, healthy, and risk‑free workplace and ensure compliance with safety, health, and environmental legislation.
• Oversee safety and housekeeping standards in workshops, artisan workstations, and production areas.
• Manage human resources, develop employees, and foster a healthy industrial‑relations climate.
• Ensure manufacturing systems and instrumentation integrity through change control, calibration, and regular maintenance.
• Develop, update, and enforce engineering standards across the zone.
• Plan and implement maintenance pillar blocks, optimize the planned maintenance system, and apply formal failure‑analysis processes.
• Lead small‑site projects, ensuring on‑time and on‑budget delivery, and manage budgeting, cost control, and financial reporting for the department.
• Provide input on new equipment and upgrade projects, guaranteeing conformance to specifications and standards.
• Lead the risk‑management program covering occupational health, safety, and legal compliance.
• Facilitate team problem‑solving, set engineering goals, conduct regular reviews, and ensure training and cross‑skilling of staff.

Required profile

• Proven experience in maintenance engineering within a packaging or manufacturing environment.
• Strong leadership and people‑management capabilities.
• Demonstrated ability to manage budgets, projects, and change‑control processes.
• Solid understanding of safety, health, environmental legislation, and corporate governance.
• Excellent communication skills for interfacing with cross‑functional teams and external stakeholders.
