Mining Pit Superintendent – Open Pit Operations Lead

About the role

The Pit Superintendent will report to the Mining Manager and lead all open‑pit mining activities at the Nyanzaga Gold Project in Tanzania. This senior position is critical for the construction, commissioning and ramp‑up phases, ensuring safe, efficient production that meets business targets.

Key responsibilities

• Lead and coordinate all open‑pit mining operations to achieve production and development goals.
• Establish and implement mining systems, procedures and site standards during construction and ramp‑up.
• Manage contractor mobilisation, equipment fleets, mining infrastructure and operational readiness.
• Provide day‑to‑day leadership to ensure safe, productive execution of work plans.
• Collaborate with mine planning, geology, maintenance and HSE teams to meet production objectives.
• Oversee drill‑and‑blast, load‑and‑haul, pit development and shift execution activities.
• Support delivery and handover of critical infrastructure such as haul roads, ROM pads and dewatering systems.
• Drive risk management, contingency planning and continuous operational improvements.

Required profile

• Degree or Diploma in Mining Engineering or equivalent.
• Mine Manager’s Certificate of Competency (or recognised equivalent).
• Minimum 15 years of open‑pit mining experience, including at least 5 years in a senior leadership or superintendent role.
• Proven experience leading mine start‑ups, commissioning or major ramp‑up projects.
• Strong contractor management and operational readiness expertise.
• Experience leading multicultural teams and developing local workforce capability.

Required skills

• Proficiency with mining software such as Surpac, Deswik or similar.
• Exposure to fleet management and mine control systems.
• Technical knowledge of drill‑and‑blast, load‑and‑haul and pit development processes.
