Senior Associate - Litigation

About the role

Bowmans is seeking an experienced Senior Associate to join its commercial litigation team in Tanzania. The role involves handling complex disputes, providing legal advice, and mentoring junior staff while representing clients across all levels of the Tanzanian court system.

Key responsibilities

• Draft pleadings, notices, affidavits, and correspondence.
• Provide legal opinions and advice on commercial litigation matters.
• Distill complex legal issues into clear, practical advice for clients.
• Manage and develop junior team members through training and upskilling.
• Appear before Magistrates Courts, High Courts, Court of Appeal, and quasi‑judicial bodies.
• Utilise alternative dispute resolution processes to settle potential disputes.
• Draft and review legal documentation, including agreements and legislative drafts.
• Conduct legal research and support senior lawyers on larger matters.
• Engage with clients and external counsel, and contribute to knowledge management and business development.
• Handle practice management tasks such as file management and electronic timekeeping.

Required profile

• Admitted attorney with 5‑7 years post‑admission experience in commercial litigation.
• LLB degree with a solid academic record.
• Strong legal technical and commercial ability, impeccable research and presentation skills.
• Demonstrated teamwork, business development, and client‑focused mindset.
• Personal attributes: initiative, responsiveness, perseverance, proactivity, results‑driven, ethical, high work standards, and strong planning/organising skills.

Required skills

• Proficient in Microsoft Word.
• Proficient in Microsoft Outlook.
• Knowledge of Microsoft Excel (advantage).
• Knowledge of Microsoft PowerPoint (advantage).
