National Expert – Transition from Pre‑Primary to Primary (Tanzania)

About the role

The Regional Teachers Initiative for Africa (RTIA) seeks an International National Expert to support Tanzania’s Ministry of Education, Science and Technology in improving the transition of children from pre‑primary to primary school. Working alongside a locally recruited national expert, you will design and deliver capacity‑building activities that promote school readiness and child‑centered pedagogy.

Key responsibilities

• Assess current school‑readiness practices in pre‑primary settings and produce a comprehensive report.
• Develop guidelines and training packages on play‑based and child‑centered pedagogy for Standard 1 & 2 teachers.
• Facilitate peer‑learning workshops that harmonise teaching practices between pre‑primary and early primary educators.
• Co‑create a holistic early childhood development (ECD) module for Communities of Learning.
• Coordinate closely with the national expert to define roles, responsibilities and added value of the assignment.

Required profile

• Advanced degree in Education, Early Childhood Development or a related field.
• Minimum 10 years of experience in basic education, including pre‑primary, with a proven record of developing teacher capacity‑building content.
• Demonstrated consultancy experience for government or international organisations.
• Strong knowledge of Tanzania’s education policies, institutional framework and gender‑responsive pedagogy (asset).
• Fluent in English and Swahili, both written and spoken.

Required skills

• Expertise in play‑based and child‑centered teaching methodologies.
• Experience designing school‑readiness programmes and training modules.
• Skilled in participatory workshop facilitation and stakeholder coordination.
