Clearance Manager

About the role

A recruitment firm representing its Tanzania-based client is looking for a Clearance Manager in Dar es Salaam. The role leads the logistics and customs department so that goods move across borders legally, compliantly and efficiently, bridging internal supply chain operations, freight forwarders and government regulators. The aim is to shorten transit times, remove compliance risks and cut port storage or demurrage penalties.

Key responsibilities

• Monitor compliance with local and international trade laws, free trade agreements and sanctions, and keep records ready for audits
• Review shipping documents such as bills of lading, commercial invoices, certificates of origin and packing lists
• Enforce accurate HS tariff classification and secure permits for restricted cargo
• Act as the main contact for customs, border control and port officials, and manage third-party brokers and freight forwarders
• Advise Procurement, Sales and Finance on duty costs, lead times and restrictions
• Supervise a team of clearing officers, clerks and logistics coordinators, set KPIs and manage the customs deferment account and duty payments

Required profile

• Bachelor's degree in Supply Chain Management, Logistics, International Trade, Business Administration or a related field
• Minimum 3 years of progressive experience in international logistics, customs brokerage or freight forwarding
• At least 2 to 3 years in a supervisory or managerial role
• Proven track record with customs disputes, demurrage reduction and high-volume import/export shipments
• Fluent English is an added advantage; the position is open to locals only

Required skills

• Certified Customs Specialist (CCS) or Certified International Trade Professional (CITP) highly preferred
• Licensed customs broker status and Incoterms or Dangerous Goods Regulations (DGR) certification also preferred
